Clear Messages for Safer Aircraft Deicing

Clear Messages for Safer Aircraft Deicing

YUL Airport

Founded in 1994, Aeromag 2000 YUL is a Québec-based company specializing in aircraft deicing. Since 1997, it has provided deicing services at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport.

Aircraft deicing involves removing ice and frost that accumulate on aircraft before departure. This critical operation requires strict coordination and control of both aircraft and ground vehicles within the deicing facility to ensure the safety of everyone involved. To achieve this, Variable Message Signs (VMS) play an essential role in guiding aircraft and communicating operational instructions.

The Challenge

As Aeromag relied on an aging fleet of Variable Message Signs that had become increasingly outdated, the company partnered with Orange Traffic to install a new generation of VMS at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport. The objective was to integrate modern technology that would optimize airside traffic management while enhancing operational safety.

One of the project's primary challenges for Orange Traffic was developing a custom software solution capable of seamlessly integrating the new VMS with Aeromag's existing control software as well as the airport's operational databases.

The Solution

To streamline the deicing process, Aeromag required Variable Message Signs that offered:

  • Remote message updates by deicing controllers
  • Easily adjustable brightness levels to suit changing weather and visibility conditions
  • A minimum service life of 15 years
  • Exceptional visibility, ensuring pilots can clearly read operational messages under all conditions

In addition to these performance requirements, Aeromag requested several custom features, including protective covers that could be installed during periods when the signs are not in operation, particularly throughout the summer months.

Leveraging its engineering expertise and the latest generation of Variable Message Sign technology, Orange Traffic successfully delivered a solution tailored to every aspect of Aeromag's operational requirements, resulting in a safer and more efficient deicing process.

Proven Results

The installation of the new Variable Message Signs has now been successfully completed, along with the deployment of the custom control software fully compatible with Aeromag's operating system.

According to Bernard Giguère, General Manager of Aeromag, the new VMS have performed exceptionally well and fully meet the operational requirements established at the outset of the project.
