Their mission is to make sure freight companies operate within the regulations of Nova Scotia. The inspection can either be random or based on the weight received on the scale. When the driver passes by the weight station, an LED sign, manufactured by Orange Traffic, indicates them if they have to stop by the weight scale station or if they can bypass it. Arrived at the station, the checkup starts by the driver’s registration and history as well as other paper work before inspecting the truck and its load. Drivers are supposedly responsible for the load they carry, how they carry it and for knowing the regulations of the different provinces, which may sometimes be tricky. Data from one inspection to the other is manually entered in a system that can be accessed by all officers in the province. At Kelly Lake’s vehicle compliance station, lobster season is their busiest time with companies going from the port to the airport with as many products as possible. To be assured that their equipment is perfectly functional, every three months there are scale maintenance and calibration, the industry asks for this maintenance yearly, but this specific compliance station wants to do better than industry standards. Also, there is a yearly training for inspectors to keep them up to date about the truck inspection regulations of the province.

Catherine Fugère, who represented Orange Traffic during this visit at Kelly Lake’s vehicle compliance station, was impressed by the good spirits of all the team members at the station and how dedicated they are to their work. It was great to understand more about the purpose of these stations that we pass by as drivers, but never truly know what their purpose is.
